After a much-hyped stint with concept shop Opening Ceremony, longtime fashion icon, indie film queen, and award-nominated superstar Chloe Sevigny is baaaack. The model and tastemaker helped launch Tomboy’s Spring/Summer 2012 campaign (shot by Daniel Jackson), marking the Korean label’s 35th anniversary. Adorned in loose, sheer threads and androgynous, sportswear-influenced pieces, Sevigny exuded both playfulness and sass with a bit of a boyish-charm – very befitting for Tomboy, wouldn’t ya say? Check out the teaser for Tomboy's Spring/Summer collection below.
Seems like Lana Del Rey's been feeling a little nostalgic recently. The indie-sensation, who wooed the praise of hipsters and celebs alike well in advance of her debut album, has recently been receiving loads of press questioning her authenticity. Some critics say that Del Rey, born Lizzie Grant, is the product of a marketing machine; label execs looking to make a dollar on Gen-Y hipster sensibilities. And while I'm a sucker for her throaty vocals and "gangsta Nancy Sinatra" vibe, there always was something a bit too-right about her pouty lips and doting eyes.
While flipping through Facebook recently, I recognized something fascinating: A promo photo of Del Rey, released officially by Universal Music Group, alongside a sketch by Chilean "hipster-artist," Fabian Ciraolo. The similarities between the two images - one of Del Rey smoking a cigarette, shirt tied at her side and the other of a modern-day Frida Kahlo smoking a cigarette, shirt twisted just right - are mind-numbing. Sure, the hipster-Del Rey decided to leave the arm-tattoos and floral headwear at home (she saved the florals for her "Born To Die" video, natch) but otherwise, the photos are exactly the same, right down to the ink on each subject's jeans.
Referencing art in fashion isn't anything new. Rihanna's camp was lambasted for blatantly stealing David LaChappelle's vision for her S&M video, and Beyonce's been bitten for using Lorella Cuccarini's direction for her Billboard performance in 2011. But Lana Del Rey? A chanteuse who oozes underground cool, who supposedly edited the "Video Games" video herself...say it ain't so! In an age where creativity and individualism are lauded, even if for a hot-Tumblr-second, this blatant theft of Ciraolo's smart re-interpretation is just plain sad.
Sure, I feel bad adding to the anti-Del Rey media clamor; she shouldn't be a scapegoat for pop packaging. But c'mon...let's give credit where credit's due. So, thanks Frida, and thanks Fabian, your art will likely outlast the latest hipster fad.
Lady Gaga is arguably the most interesting, provocative and progressive pop artist of our generation. But is she genuine, or just a carbon copy of the iconic Madonna? That's the question critics have argued over since Gaga (and her gays) hit the dance floor with [...]
Just two days before the Super Bowl, Madonna has released the lead single from her upcoming album, MDNA. "Give Me All Ur Luvin" is saccharine-pop goodness but seems more fit more Miley Cyrus than it does for Madonna. Featuring Nicki Minaj and MIA, for seriously [...]
In 2005, H&M turned the fashion world on its ear by teaming up with the legendary Karl Lagerfeld, who designed an assortment of affordably-priced clothes for the mega-brand. The collection sold out faster than you could say haute couture and before long the high+low equation was more [...]
