The Political Message Has Changed From “Hope” To “Disgust” This Election Cycle

Wait: This is for real?

During a much needed midday blog feed, I noticed that we are less than three weeks from electing the next president of this country.

Wait: This is for real? All of the spewed vitriol, the blowhard speeches, the viral youtube clips, the glib grins and snarky sneers at one another – this is the actual campaign? Maybe I have been so entertained by the past nine months of “politics” that I haven’t noticed that it’s not an SNL or 30 Rock parody – this comic act is what we are getting, folks. The grown ups won’t step in and take over between now and the election – it’ll only get worse.

Our culture has us so attuned to rapid response and the forwarding and replaying of video bites that we seem to delight in these antics- the more preposterous the better, no matter which side you’re on – rather than question what this type of politics means for our country .

Why are we as Americans standing for this? We used to hear positions, plans and promises from our candidates while leaving the reverb and exaggeration to the extreme media and occasional attack ad. Now all we hear are accusations of lying, flip-flopping and questionable fact-checking from the candidates and their camps. The mutual dislike between the Republican nominee and current President was so evident at last Tuesday’s debate, it was surprising that they didn’t come to blows. The only take-away message for voters was that each candidate thinks the other is a liar. How reassuring.

I am by no means qualified to write on politics – at best I am an amateur and at worst I’m apathetic. But I, for one, am seriously disappointed in both campaigns. Wasn’t it just four years ago that “Hope” was the resounding message of at least one party’s campaign? “Disgust” seems a more apt one this time around. – Julia Gilbert

  1. Romney started the whole “blame game” because he’s lying himself. He tried to throw Obama under the bus so Obama had to defend himself.
