8 Memorable Runway Moments From Fashion Weeks Past

Naomi Takes A Spill At Vivenne Westwood Autumn/Winter 1993

(Fast Forward To 9:02)

When Vivienne Westwood sent her models down the runway in Super Elevated Gillie shoes back in ’93, bets were placed on which model would fall first. Top model Naomi Campbell started her walk strong before slipping up in the platform heel, landing flat on the catwalk…YIKES! Instead of chucking the shoe at the swarm of photogs, Campbell laughed it off and kept on strutting. So whatever happened to her pair of Gillie shoes? The model reportedly uses the Westwood platform as a weapon  door stopper.

Alexander McQueen’s Spray Painting Robots Spring/Summer 1999

With just one model, McQueen dropped numerous jaws at his S/S 99 show. Wearing a strapless white dress, Shalom Harlow took center stage as two robotic guns sprayed paint on her pristine white dress, leaving her body drenched in paint. It was a perfect merge of  performance art and couture. Sigh, they just don’t make ‘em like McQueen anymore.

Kate Moss Was A Hologram Before Even Tupac – McQueen S/S 2006

As fashion magazines ripped “Cokate” to shreds in 2005, McQueen lifted up Kate Moss’s spirits by sending a hologram version of her down the runway in a torn silk gown. It was beautiful, haunting, and genius.

Chanel Does Threesomes For Spring/Summer 2010

There’s only one way to top a Chanel Carousel…THREESOMES! For Chanel’s S/S 2010 show, Karl Lagerfeld tapped Lily Allen as performer, ushered in temporary leg tats and clogs and closed out the show with a ménage à trois featuring Freja Beha Erichsen, Baptiste Giabiconi and Lara Stone! And there you have it, the precursor to lesbian chic

The House of Emanuel Ungaro is still kicking itself for hiring Lindsay Lohan as a creative advisor for its 2010 collection. The collection’s weird ruching and bedazzle overloads made for a whole lotta bad press and a swift kicking to the curb for LaLohan.

Moncler Brings The Flash Mob To Grand Central Station Fall/Winter 2011

Moncler gave designers a quick how-to on standing out during NYFW when the brand ditched Lincoln Center for Grand Central Station, where 150 dancers broke out in dance while wearing the puffers and ski gear from the fall/winter 2011 collection. Tourists, and Youtube, loved it!

Lady Gaga Makes Her Runway Debut At Mugler Fall/Winter 2011

When Nicole Formichetti took over the creative direction at Thierry Mugler, he tapped Lady Gaga to be his runway muse.  Cigarette in hand, Gaga stole the show, striking a serious pose right in front of Anna Wintour. We’ll assume this was the moment when Anna thought, “Gaga would be great for our September cover.”

The Louis Vuitton Train Fall/Winter 2012

Marc Jacobs brought out the big guns and a big train to Paris last Spring! Models had personal porters carrying their Vuitton bags as they stomped down the Parisian runway. And Kate Moss showed up…everything!
