Even though this year’s VMAs will cut into FNO-time, you best believe we’ll be glued to the TV set come 8p EST. That’s because every year, there’s at least ONE unforgettable interaction – a crazy fan, an interrupted acceptance speech, an awkward performance. So to temper our excitement, we bring you the WORST moments in VMA history aka the moments we LIVE FOR.
5. Britney Spears Gimme More’ (2007)
In 2007, Britney Spears gave the laziest, most drug-riddled performance we’ve ever seen. As she sang her hit “Gimme More,” the pop star looked dazed and confused, counting down the seconds until the song was over. We’ll give her a pass, though. Allegedly, Brit Brit only had a day to learn the choreography.
4. Courtney Love Interrupts Madonna (1995)
Though we’re pretty sure we never saw this one live, Courtney Love interrupting Madonna was the best MTV News moment EVER. The Hole singer drunkenly threw the contents of her purse at Madonna and proceeded to mock Madge as Kurt Loder stood aghast. But never try and take down Madonna, the singer ended the interview saying, “Courtney Love is in DIRE need of attention right now.” Claws OUT!
3. Andrew Dice Clay’s Foul Mouth Stand Up (1989)
Ugh, this one just speaks for itself. Andrew Dice Clay gave a expletive-ridden comedy routine to introduce Cher at the 1989 VMAs. His adult nursery lines (like “Your mother’s a whore, I ain’t your pop”) left the audience in disgust. The comedian’s lewd mouth got him BANNED from MTV forever! YIKES.
2. Lil Mama Jay Z Alicia Keys (2009)

When Lil Mama got on stage with Jay-Z and Alicia Keys during their ‘Empire State Of Mind’ performance, she pretty much ended her career. Likely, the most AWKWARD moment ever.
1. Kanye West Steals Taylor Swift’s Spotlight (2009)

As Taylor Swift accepted her award, Mr. Humble graciously walked on stage, took the mic from her, and told the audience that Beyonce was the greatest performer of all time. While he was, umm, right, he was wildly out of place. And Taylor’s sad face after the incident…gets us every time.
