How to Look Patriotic Without Looking Tacky This July 4th

Just a week away from Uncle Sam’s birthday, here’s our take on how to look beautiful while celebrating America, the Beautiful. This Fourth of July, go with the usual get-up, but don’t over do it with the reds, whites, and blues; think simplicity when it comes to rocking patriotic colors and patterns. So below, we’ve outlined how to pop like a firework by looking super-simple and super stylish this 4th:

+ American Flag Shorts

Ah, the trusty ol’ American flag shorts. Probably the staple piece in your nationalist wardrobe, these patriotic bottoms took America by storm when both the likes of Solange Knowles and Rihanna were sighted in the stars and stripes… But when wearing these teensy bottoms, it’s important to pair them with a neutral-colored top like a white tee – otherwise it just gets to be too much. After all, we can’t all be Azealia Banks. (See the Harlem beauty in her music video for “Liquorice.”)

It’s hard to rock an American flag top (or any patriotic get-up, for that matter) without looking cheesy, but we thought Kate Bosworth did a fairly decent job at this year’s Coachella music festival. When celebrating America’s birthday next week, go simple with the flag top, distressed denims, aviators, and maybe a fedora or a wide-brimmed hat.

Tone down a pair of flag trousers with a vintage Nirvana tee or even Dad’s old button-up. Or choose to pair your pants with one of America’s most renowned pop artists! OBEY x Keith Haring’s latest collection is available at Urban Outfitters right now! Maybe add a pair of Chuck Taylors or Jeffrey Campbell’s,  and voila! USA!

We see it every Independence Day – girls show up by the poolside in the tired old American flag bikini and a pair of short shorts. After a while, even Daisy Duke gets to be a little old. Instead, channel your inner Jackie O. or Marilyn Monroe and settle for a retro one-piece or vintage halter top, available at Modcloth. Don’t forget about the proper eyewear too!
