How do people react when they find out you’re an opera singer?
I’m not exactly your typical opera singer. A lot of people say “I thought you were a designer.” I’m starting full force this fall with auditions. I hope the opera world appreciates someone like me who’s a little different from your typical opera singer.
You’re very in tune with who you are as a person, so how exactly would you describe your style?
My style, I would say, is very sort of “me”. When you have style, it’s because you are you and okay with that. It’s a matter of being comfortable in your own skin, and about loving yourself and expressing yourself. Style is a celebration of who YOU are.
Who inspires “who you are?”
I definitely have a lot of inspirations. Number one is the artist, like Picasso or Maillol. This sounds crazy, but Maillol’s famous thing is nude sculptures of females and I love his work because the models he uses remind me of my own body – very round and bottom heavy. I love that because he saw that type of woman as really beautiful, and whenever I see his work I’m like, “Yes! I’m beautiful, I love myself!” As far as fictional characters, my inspiration is Annie Hall. It’s my favorite movie, I love ties and vests. You still keep yourself feminine, but give it a boyish twist.
Where do you shop when you’re looking to make your inspirations, like Annie Hall, come to life?
A lot of places I like to go are definitely discounted department stores where you’re buying something that’s the best quality, but you’re not paying full price for it. That’s kind of a thrill I get. So Century 21, INA, and my little secret is TJ Maxx! I am not joking! They have a designer section so if you see a little tag that’s like blue or purple, it’s the good shit.
What’s working for you this spring?
Bell bottoms are back! I love it! The big flares and the flowy pants, I’m excited for it.
Where are your favorite New York City hangouts?
The French Roast, it’s this cute little café that’s very close to me. Another place I really like to go for dinner is Caravan of Dreams, it’s this place in the east village that’s vegan. Every time I go there I’m like, “Ahhh, I love this food!”
