LISTEN: Kreayshawn ‘Gucci Gucci’ Video

Crank up the volume for Kreyashawn’s latest dubstep-influenced track about having unique style and the attitude to pull it all off.  With her video topping 1.5 million YouTube views in just two weeks and a rumored million-dollar deal with Sony Music, we aren’t the first to take notice of the Oakland rapper, and we sure won’t be the last. Though we’re not holding our breath on the Sony deal – too many dollar signs and not enough details – there’s no doubt that her Gucci Gucci track, and ties with Odd-Future, are signs of good things to come. Be sure to stick around until the end of the video (“They don’t need Gucci. They don’t need Louis. They Swaggin’”) and you’ll see why we’ve found our new summer anthem…

When Less Is More – Tom Fitzer

Seems like summer bumped spring out of its way a little early this year. Luckily, Tom Fitzer was well-prepared for the ensuing heat. Over the weekend, we ran into the teen-Brit who showed us how to master 80′s UK grunge in nothing but overalls, a spiked choker, and a vintage flannel (for when the sun goes down obvi). Take notes, kids, less really is more.

When poet/musician Gil Scott-Heron passed away on Sunday, multiple artists showed an outpouring of love, updating their Facebook and Twitter profiles with tributes. Some artists, like the rapper Consequence, posted tribute tracks recorded with, or in honor of, one of the most politically-charged musicians of the 70s. Listen to Consequence’s version of My Way Home, below or Jamie xx’s I’ll Take Care Of U here.

Green sea turtles under watch as populations decrease. see here green sea turtle

PAC – Pacific Islands Broadcasting Association June 2, 2004 02 JUNE 2004 SAIPAN (Pacnews) — Green sea turtles are currently being monitored around the Northern Mariana islands of Anatahan, Farallon de Medinilla, Saipan, Tinian, Aguijan and Rota as populations continue to decrease worldwide.

The turtle has been classified as “threatened with extinction” by the US government, making it illegal to harm, harass, kill or even cause the behaviour of a green sea turtle to change, Marianas Variety reports.

It is also illegal to destroy any habitats required by the turtles to grow and survive, and to sell any product made from any part of a green sea turtle.

However, over last 100 years, the Northern Marianas has seen a sharp decrease in the number of green sea turtles nests with eggs – from over 15 to only one or two every year. go to website green sea turtle

Inocencio Ilo, fisheries technician at the Northern Marianas Division of Fish and Wildlife and the head of the turtle research programme, said there are an estimated 1,000 to 2,000 green sea turtles in the Northern Marianas, using the marine environment around the islands of Saipan, Tinian and Rota.

He also noted that there are over 10 green sea turtles nests poached every year.

“I just hope that people understand that when they disturb the nests, they are contributing to the decrease in the (turtle) population,” Mr Ilo told Marianas Variety.

“It is a serious problem in the CNMI (Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands)…. That’s why we continue to go around schools to educate the students about the need to protect green sea turtles, and hoping they would also tell their parents,” he said.

People have contributed to the decrease in the green sea turtle population through poaching eggs, and disturbing nesting females which interferes with egg-laying.

Other factors include the development of the shoreline with lights which prevent turtles from laying eggs, the compaction of the beach sand by vehicles which kills young turtles residing in nests, pollution of the shore environments, plastic trash that entangles turtles, killing turtles at sea, and collisions with boats.

LISTEN: Mr. Little Jeans ‘Suburbs’ (Arcade Fire Cover)

Looks like one of last year’s top albums, Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs, has some serious staying power. Almost 9 months after its release, artists like Mr. Little Jeans continue to sample, mix and cover tracks from the album – some with outstanding results. The latest cover of title-track Suburbs is tricked out with deep beats and an all around smoother sound. Perfect for a chill (and sweaty) day at the beach. Listen in…Happy Memorial Day!
